Plain Language: A Tool for Communicating Effectively with Patients, Partners, and Colleagues

Workshop

Workshop Description:

We often talk about plain language in the context of communicating with patients. In reality, everyone can benefit from these practices, including our colleagues and community partners. Everyone appreciates communication that feels like it was created with the intention to be understood! Whether you are writing internal policies, sharing information about your work with another organization, or making content for community members, clear and effective communication is vital. In this session, we will review key plain language strategies, compare and contrast content centering varied audiences, and consider areas where we can increase use of plain language in our own work.

Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the benefits of plain language for varied audiences
  • Compare and contrast texts using a plain language lens, considering audience, purpose, and format
  • Identify barriers to clear communication in one’s organization and possible solutions
