Organizational Health Literacy: How to Implement Changes in Community-based Organizations

Workshop

Workshop Description:

Guidelines exist about what constitutes a health-literate organization, but little has been done to make these guidelines actionable or extend them to non-clinical health settings. Health Confianza is a San Antonio-based multi-level program piloting a pledge program to equip community-based organizations to make organizational health literacy (OHL) changes. Ten participating organizations self-assessed their health literacy environments, using the results to develop priority actions in: policy; practice; navigation; culture and language; and communication. The actions were turned into an OHL Plan during an eight-month learning collaborative. A media campaign will highlight what the pledge program means for clients.

Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of organizational health literacy efforts in community-based settings.
  • Describe an innovative program to achieve organizational change to improve health literacy for clients and patients.
  • Describe methods for evaluating organizational health literacy efforts.
