Impact Workgroups

Join the Health Literacy Impact Workgroups

Be part of a community-led effort to preserve vital resources, shape inclusive language, elevate emerging leaders, and build momentum across sectors. These five workgroups were born from real conversations at the IHA Health Literacy Conference and are open to all—whether you're a seasoned expert or just getting started. Together, we’re turning ideas into action.

Five Focus Areas

1. Glossary Development Workgroup

Help develop a shared, adaptable glossary of terms that have been found to be acceptable and do not trigger rejections or red flags, for use across professional settings. We'll explore how language can be both effective and politically viable in different environments. This group will create a "living glossary" tool where contributors can add, refine, and test new terms in real time.

2. Resource Preservation Workgroup

Take action to safeguard disappearing tools and knowledge. This group will identify at-risk resources (e.g., from AHRQ, CDC), develop strategies for storage and access, and work with IHA to ensure these materials remain available through platforms like the IHA Health Literacy Solutions Center or other appropriate sites.

3. Student & Early-Career Engagement Workgroup

Help elevate and support the next generation of health literacy leaders. This group will create inclusive opportunities for students and early-career professionals to co-lead sessions, share their insights, and stay engaged in this evolving field.

4. Strategic Framing for Policy & Practice Workgroup

Dive into the nuanced work of language and framing. This workgroup will explore how to talk about health literacy in ways that align with current policy and funding climates while staying true to core values. Collaborate on sample messaging and language guidance for organizations and advocates.

5. Field Messaging & Collective Action Workgroup

Co-create unifying public messages—such as a shared call to action or a campaign highlighting community-centered health literacy practices. This group will explore how the field can coordinate across sectors, amplify innovation, and build the infrastructure for long-term collaboration.
