Health Meets Art: Health Literacy Poetry Series

11-29-2022 12:36 PM

Webinar Description:
Meet City of Rockford’s Youth Poet, Giulyana Gamero, and learn more about her health literacy poetry series. Throughout this body of work, Gamero encourages family members that speak English as a second language to request interpreters in health care settings, calls on her health care provider to leave the confusing jargon outside of her appointments, and reflects on how she may better and more. Their poems were crafted to both celebrate the skill and experiences Gamero possesses, but also to welcome her fellow Rockford residents to join the conversation.

Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the role art can play to better explain and understand public health messaging
  • Learn how to creatively engage communities to understand their needs and experiences
  • Learn how to collaborate with artists to ensure the commissioned work is both an authentic artistic expression and a body of work that exhibits strategies to improve health literacy such as clear and linguistically appropriate communications.
