The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration developed this in-depth treatment improvement protocol (TIP), which was updated in 2019. This TIP discusses the benefits of motivational interviewing. In addition, it tells how substance use disorder treatment counselors can use this technique to effect positive behavior change in their clients.
