Creating Easy-to-Understand Multimedia Tools for Parents of kids with Disabilities

Webinar Description:

Exceptional Lives is a free online resource site for parents and caregivers of kids with disabilities. The goal is to help them find and apply for services, and navigate systems of support. It has been built on a foundation of plain language and health literacy principles, and has gone through several iterations to make it easier to use and more accessible, acknowledging new trends in how people interact with technology. This session will describe the components of our path toward continual improvement.

Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify resources in 4 multimedia formats for educating parents on the Exceptional Lives site.
  • Explain how to use health literacy principles and data analysis to create easy-to-use online resources
  • Describe 3 different ways to improve the experience of people using a website to learn about taking care of their child’s needs

Julie McKinney is a health literacy specialist with over 20 years of experience in the field, with a focus on creating plain language materials, forming partnerships, and sharing resources. She has moderated the Health Literacy Discussion List for 17 years. Julie now also works with Exceptional Lives, Inc., a non-profit in Boston, MA. She develops and writes easy-to-read tools to help parents of children with disabilities navigate complex processes and get the benefits, services and support they need.
