Choosing Communication: Strategies for Building Health Literacy Capacity

Designated as a Priority Area of the national Healthy People 2030 goals, Health Literacy is increasingly becoming an important focus area for tackling systemic issues related to health disparities and the promotion of health equity. Health literacy can be addressed both from a personal and organizational perspective. Approaches for building health literacy capacity and using communication strategies are discussed by a rural and urban health department in Arizona.

Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and choose different strategies for prioritizing health literacy.
  • Use different plain language and health literacy tools for evaluating various media materials.
  • Identify processes for implementing health literacy best practices into departmental workflows.

Speakers:

Georgia Weiss-Elliott, MA

Participatory Evaluation Specialist, Arizona Prevention Research Center, Participatory Evaluation Institute

Georgia is a Participatory Evaluation Specialist with the Arizona Prevention Research Center in the Participatory Evaluation Institute who works closely with partners in Yuma County on issues related to Health Literacy, Community Health Workers, and mitigating the effects of Covid-19 amongst vulnerable populations. She holds a master's in Geography from the University of Arizona.

Laura Aviles, CHW
Program Coordinator, Yuma County Public Health Services District

Laura Aviles is currently a Program Coordinator for Yuma County Public Health Services District working in public health. Prior to becoming a Program Coordinator, she was a Health Educator for 19 years specializing in the Health Promotions Division.

Dr. Satya Sarma, MD

Dr. Sarma is a board-certified Internist with over 30 years' of experience in a variety of healthcare settings including population health and public health.

Affiliation: Principal Investigator for the Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 grant awarded to Maricopa County Department of Public Health

Lisa Blue, MHI, BSN, RN

Lisa is the Chief Clinical Innovation Officer with Providertech as well as a Registered Nurse with experience in various clinical settings. Lisa also earned her Master of Healthcare Innovation degree.

Affiliation: Co-Principal Investigator for the Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 grant awarded to Maricopa County Department of Public Health
