I am an Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Center for Health Literacy. I hold a dual appointment with the Faculty of Law at the University of Arkansas Little Rock, Bowen School of Law. In this dual role, I teach health literacy courses for all of UAMS’s health programs, I teach law & medicine for medical students, and I teach clear legal writing for law students.
My expertise is on the intersection of health literacy, plain language, and the law. I am the first lawyer ever to be appointed to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy and the FDA’s Risk Communication Advisory Committee. I frequently speak and consult on improving informed consent practices, creating clear legal documents that people can understand, and on developing novel ways to improve health outcomes while reducing organizational risks.
