Public Health

The public health domain includes skills and knowledge associated with communicating accessible health information to the public. Public audiences are diverse, and public health messages often call for a specific action, so public health communications must be both inclusive and engaging. A Health Literacy Specialist (HLS) would:
  • Initiate and lead the development and execution of data-informed strategies to address the needs of groups at risk for limited health literacy.
  • Use plain language in public health information and health behavior recommendations.
  • Develop health and safety information that is understandable, accessible, and actionable.
  • Apply a health literacy perspective to health promotion, disease prevention, risk communication, and chronic disease management programs.
