Health literacy is the ability to understand and use health information to make informed decisions and manage one's healthHealth literacy affects patient outcomes in various ways, such as:

  • Patient safety: People with low health literacy are more likely to misunderstand instructions or make errors in medication use.

  • Health behaviors: People with low health literacy are less likely to engage with preventive services, such as cancer screening, or to adopt healthy lifestyles.

  • Health status: People with low health literacy are more likely to have worse physical and mental health, such as depression and anxiety.

  • Health care utilization and costs: People with low health literacy are more likely to have higher hospital re-admission rates, more frequent use of emergency services, and higher care costs.


Objectives:

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  1. Gain information and increased understanding into how low health literacy directly affects patient outcomes.

  2. Discover who is responsible for improving health literacy which leads to improved patient outcomes.

  3. Understand what research is showing between health literacy and patient outcomes.

  4. Learn ways of improving your own health literacy as well as leading others to do the same.

Jessica Daly currently serves as Head of Collections and Electronic Resources and Head of Library Outreach and Marketing for the R.A. Williams Library at AdventHealth University in Orlando, Florida. As a faculty librarian, she holds the ranking of Assistant Professor. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education as well as a Master of Library Science from East Carolina University. Jessica is a published author, columnist, and public speaker. Jessica was named “Hospital Librarian of the Year for 2020” by the Southern Chapter of the Medical Library of Medicine and was awarded “Exemplary Instructional Programs or Ser-vices” in 2022 by the Florida Library Association. Jessica has been married to her best friend, Brian, for 24 years and is the proud mother of Taylor, her 20-year-old daughter who attends Seminole State College. She has two dogs, Bella, a Shih Tzu mix, and Scout, a Golden Retriever.
