Many states have adopted proclamations for Health Literacy Month to raise awareness about the importance of health literacy and support efforts to improve low health literacy in every community. During this webinar, Joy Deupree, Teresa Wagner, Karen Komondor, Lauri DeRuiter-Willems, and Elizabeth Squires will draw on their experience to discuss how to draft and implement a proclamation.
Objectives:
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
• Use sample language to draft a proclamation in their respective states.• List key elements that need to be included in a proclamation.• Identify resources required to implement a proclamation.

Joy Deupree, Ph.D., RN, WHNP-BC, FAAN is a Professor and the Associate Dean for Practice Innovation, Partnerships and Policy at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing in Columbia with more than 22 years of experience in health literacy that includes innovative and experiential curricula development, research, practice, and consulting at the state and national levels. While at UAB she developed an interprofessional/interdisciplinary HL course taught to more than 2,000 nursing, medical, dental, and public health students over 15 years. In 2019, she led a statewide initiative to develop the Alabama Health Literacy Initiative with a strategic plan found on the CDC website.

Lauri DeRuiter-Willems, PhD, Assistant Professor, Departmental Honors Coordinator, Department of Public Health and Nutrition, Eastern Illinois University since 2006. Lauri’s research and teaching practice includes health literacy and social determinants of health, health marketing and communication, and student career preparation and professional development. By incorporating experiential learning activities and practical applications into teaching, she believes students are best prepared for the workforce. These activities serve as the basis of her professional service and research efforts.

Elizabeth Squires, MPH, MCHES, Assistant Director of External and Pipeline Projects, National Center for Rural Health Professions (NCRHP), University of Illinois Chicago since 2021. Beth plans, implements, and evaluates all external and pipeline projects for the NCRHP which also includes applying for grant opportunities as needed to help fund the projects. Pipeline projects are those that help "pipe" students into specific professions. Beth's focus is to "pipe" high school and college students into healthcare majors to grow the rural healthcare workforce. Beth also works directly with students, faculty, staff, academic partners, organizations, and rural stakeholders to identify, reduce, and eliminate rural health disparities as well as recruit for collaboration in pipeline projects.
Teresa Wagner, DrPH, MS, CPH, RD/LD, CPPS, CHWI, DipACLM, CHWCAssistant Professor/Clinical Executive

Dr. Wagner holds a doctorate in public health. Dr. Wagner has delivered multiple programs, speaking engagements and trainings on health literacy issues. Her research focuses on alleviating health disparities in underserved communities through health literacy to improve population health. Additionally, she established both a multi-stakeholder health literacy collaborative with the DFW Hospital Council Foundation focusing on organizational health literacy and Health Literacy Texas, a statewide nonprofit to build community around health literacy efforts in Texas.
Karen Komondor, RN, BSN, CCRNDirector of Organizational Development and the Health Literacy Institute at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center

Karen Komondor, RN, BSN, CCRN is the Director of Organizational Development and the Health Literacy Institute at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She has led health literacy initiatives there since 2007. Karen has conducted trainings and presented health literacy topics at numerous health care facilities and conferences. She has authored several articles and been a guest speaker for radio programs and local TV Stations. She is a regular guest lecturer on health literacy at NEOMED-CSU Partnership and CWRU. She has been chair of Healthy Cleveland’s Health Literacy Committee since 2017 and is immediate past president and co-founder of Ohio Health Literacy Partners, a state-wide, non-profit collaborative whose mission is to empower all Ohioans to make informed health choices. She is most recently chair of the National Council to Improve Patient Safety through Health Literacy.
