    Hi, Tracy.

    My challenge is to find a reliable AI tool to translate our library of educational animations into  foreign languages, starting with Arabic and Norwegian. The cost of doing this with a translation service has become unaffordable, unfortunately. Any experience in this area for Nationwide Childrens?

    This is a great question. I will be honest and say that I have not used it a ton for translation myself. From several research articles that I have read, it appears that the bigger LLMs like ChatGPT do a decent job with more common languages like Spanish but just don't have enough data to be trustworthy with less commonly spoken languages. You might be able to have it do a translation for you and then pay a translator to check the translation which is usually less expensive. At this point, I would ALWAYS have a human translator review anything you've used AI to translate. In fact, many organizations are now requiring this. I just don't think the AI are quite there yet in my experience. There is one program that we pay for called Vyond, that we use to create videos. In theory, it can translate text in over 70 different languages. I haven't had the opportunity to use this as much I would have liked but might be worth looking into. There is a yearly cost associated with the program but maybe could be worth it for you depending on your budget. Even with Vyond, I would still recommend have a human translator doublecheck the work though.

    Hi Ron,

    I haven't come across an AI that can do justice to Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA) for our patient education videos. As a result, we use a service for script translation, and then fine-tune the final video product with our in-house translators. One of the challenges with MSA is achieving proper pronunciation when using an AI text-to-speech (TTS) voice. We've found that we need to produce a second version of the script that includes diacritics for the TTS AI voiceover.

    Also keep in mind that spoken Arabic typically adds to the length of a voiceover (even though the script will be shorter!), so you'll need to lengthen video scenes as well-unless you just go with closed captions. But even then, you need to make sure you're not rushing the reader.

    I'm hopeful that AI will get there soon. As it is, we limit our video translations to English, Spanish, and Arabic, as those cover the majority of our patient population. But it would be wonderful to be able to produce a Norwegian or Chinese or Vietnamese version of a video, when needed, in under an hour.

    My librarian-colleagues and I participated in multiple AI-related professional development opportunities and would regularly discuss how to assess AI tools. I practiced using prompts within the free versions of ChatGPT, DALL-E, ScholarGPT, CanvaAI, Meta AI, and Google NotebookLM. Luckily, last semester, I was in a behavioral science course, in which it was okay to use AI tools to help us in the design thinking process.
