Public Health and Health Literacy
The public health domain includes skills and knowledge associated with communicating accessible health information to the public. Public audiences are diverse, and public health messages often call for a specific action, so public health communications must be both inclusive and engaging. A Health Literacy Specialist (HLS) would:
- Initiate and lead the development and execution of data-informed strategies to address the needs of groups at risk for limited health literacy.
- Use plain language in public health information and health behavior recommendations.
- Develop health and safety information that is understandable, accessible, and actionable.
- Apply a health literacy perspective to health promotion, disease prevention, risk communication, and chronic disease management programs.
