From Information Overload to Informed Action: Using Health Literacy to Ignite Better Health Decisions

Description:

Patients today are bombarded with health information—both good and bad—and often struggle to tell the difference. The common response is to provide even more information, yet information alone rarely leads to better health decisions. In this session, Dr. Alice Burron will share practical strategies to help patients move from information overload to informed action. Participants will learn how to distinguish between health information and misinformation, guide patients to do the same, and transform health data into knowledge and wisdom. They will also apply tools such as motivational interviewing and decision aids to strengthen patient self-agency. Finally, participants will recognize how empowering patients through health literacy strategies can also strengthen families and communities.

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate health information and misinformation, as well as health data, information, knowledge, wisdom, and explain how these distinctions empower patients to think critically when making health decisions.

  • Apply practical tools—decision aids, motivational interviewing techniques, and communication strategies—to strengthen patient self-agency and support better health choices.

  • Recognize how equipping patients with literacy and agency fosters healthier families and communities, while also connecting individuals to supportive local resources that align with their health philosophy.
