Toolkit for Engaging Patients To Improve Diagnostic Safety

A team led by the MedStar Health Institute for Quality and Safety developed this toolkit for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The toolkit aims to improve diagnostic safety by enhancing communication and information sharing between patients/families and healthcare providers.

The toolkit focuses on 2 strategies:

  • Be the Expert on You. This strategy teaches patients and their families how to share their personal health stories with providers clearly and concisely.
  • 60 Seconds To Improve Diagnostic Safety. This strategy teaches providers how to use deep, reflective listening for 1 minute at the start of each office visit.

The toolkit is easy to understand and use. It includes the following materials:

  • Video, implementation roadmap, and infographic about the toolkit
  • Worksheets and surveys for patients and providers
  • Evaluation planning tool
  • Staff training handouts and slides
