Health literacy development is central to the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases

The WHO's report on Health Literacy for NCD Prevention offers practical guidance to develop health literacy for scalable, contextually-relevant public health actions. It aims to reduce NCD burden and inequities by acknowledging that health behaviors are shaped by lifelong experiences and social practices, often hidden and beyond control. Meaningful community engagement and locally-driven actions are crucial to identify health literacy strengths and challenges, leading to locally tailored actions. Health literacy should inform local and national policies, promoting environments that reduce NCD risk factors. Rather than deficit-based approaches and isolated health policies, integration of community-based solutions is advocated, considering daily experiences and social practices.
