The Health Literacy of America’s Adults: Results From the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics developed this 2006 report. The results are based on assessment tasks designed to measure the health literacy level of U.S. adults.

The report includes many statistics about the health literacy of U.S. adults. These include figures about the link between a person’s health literacy level and their:

  • Demographic characteristics (age, race/ethnicity, gender, language, education, and income).
  • Overall health.
  • Health insurance coverage.
  • Sources of information about health issues.

The Executive Summary (found near the beginning) gives an overview of the report.
