Use and Usefulness of After-Visit Summaries by Language and Health Literacy Among Latinx and Chinese Primary Care Patients

This 2020 article by Sarah Nouri et al. discusses a project to understand how patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and limited health literacy (LHL) use the after visit summary (AVS). Researchers interviewed English-, Spanish-, Cantonese-, and Mandarin-speaking Latinx and Chinese primary-care patients. They asked the patients if they use the AVS and how useful they find it.

Researchers found differences among patients based on their LEP and LHL status, as well as their language preference. They concluded that an AVS should be easy to understand and in the user’s preferred language.
