Mediators and Moderators of Improvements in Medication Adherence: Secondary Analysis of a Community Health Worker-Led Diabetes Medication Self-Management Support Program

This 2018 article by Rebecca Hofer et al. discusses a randomized controlled trial in which researchers compared two models of medication decision support that were led by community health workers (CHWs).

The study participants were low-income Latino and African-American adults with diabetes. Most of them had relatively low health literacy.

The authors explored factors that affected whether patients took their drugs as prescribed. They found that most outcomes were improved when CHWs used either an interactive e-Health tool or print materials.
