Providing CLAS

Building rapport with patients includes providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS). Think Cultural Health (part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) developed this guide. The guide aims to help healthcare providers learn about patients (e.g., social identities, values, communication needs) and act on what they learn with respect and compassion.

The guide is easy to understand and use. It includes the following topics:

  • Cultural competency and humility
  • Effective communication
  • Health literacy methods
  • Language assistance
  • LEARN model
  • Listening and learning methods
  • Teach-back
  • Team building and shared decision making
