Motivational Interviewing in Practice

Tiara Adams of Northwestern University developed these presentation slides in 2016. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s EvidenceNOW Initiative provided funding.

The slides discuss 4 key techniques for motivational interviewing:

  1. Use the change ruler to assess the current situation.
  2. Elicit change talk.
  3. Use the OARS model to communicate. (OARS stands for open-ended questions, affirming, reflective listening, and s)
  4. Use the 5 As (ask, assess, advice, assist, and arrange).
