This 2020 article by Soheila Zabolypour et al. discusses a study of 81 patients with high blood pressure. Researchers randomly divided patients into 3 groups: 1) teach-back, 2) motivational interviewing, and 3) control (routine care). (Note: Like motivational interviewing, teach-back is a health literacy technique for providers. It’s a non-judgmental, non-shaming way to confirm that a patient understands health information.)
After 2 months, researchers compared the 3 groups of patients. They found that both teach-back and motivational interviewing increased adherence to the treatment plan. However, motivational interviewing was more effective than teach-back in boosting adherence.
