When Vaccines Become a Choice: Shared-Decision Making and Informed Consent as Health Literacy Skills

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently changed focus for the administration of five vaccines from a routine, catch-up, and risk-based recommendation approach to a shared clinical decision-making (SCDM) approach. The focus of the SCDM approach is that choices are individually based and informed by a decision process between the health care provider and the patient. However, concerns arise when patients lack adequate health literacy skills to understand the SCDM process and their role in informed consent. This presentation will provide tools to teach SCDM to empower older adults to make appropriate vaccine choices based on the principles of SCDM and age-friendly healthcare, which focus on “what matters most”, so that they can be advocates for their health and well-being.
