Using an American Sign Language Video to Improve Advance Care Planning Engagement Among Deaf Adults

Session summary: This quality improvement project aimed to improve advance care planning (ACP) participation among Deaf adults by using an American Sign Language (ASL) video. Conducted at a Deaf senior citizen organization, both language and literacy barriers were addressed to ensure access to ACP health information. The project used the Plan-Do-Study-Act method and measured engagement through the PREPARE™ ACP Engagement Survey. Survey scores showed an overall improvement in ACP behaviors. It emphasized the importance of providing ASL options to promote equitable access to ACP information and support healthcare providers in offering resources that promote health literacy.

Learning Objectives:

  • After this session, attendees will identify at least two barriers to healthcare access faced by Deaf individuals and explain how language and literacy challenges can affect health literacy and decision-making.

  • After this session, attendees will describe how an ASL video intervention can improve advance care planning engagement in the Deaf community, focusing on findings from the quality improvement project.

  • After this session, attendees will propose two strategies for integrating ASL video interventions into healthcare practices or research to improve equitable access to healthcare information for Deaf patients and families.
