Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids (HAs) are a newer option for patients with hearing loss. While they promote access, patients must choose and fit the devices without help from a licensed audiologist. As a result, people often rely on online information to select, use, and manage these devices. This two-phase study examined the plain language qualities and user perceptions of a sample of online OTC HA materials. Most materials exceeded recommended reading levels and scored poorly on understandability and actionability. Materials with stronger plain language attributes were more likely to be recommended, even by people with adequate health literacy and digital literacy.
