Poster abstract: We manually analyzed verbatim transcripts of video-recorded encounters between medical students and standardized patients for the use of medical jargon by the students. Using the same videos, we then created automated transcripts using voice recognition software. Next, we analyzed the manual and automated transcripts using proprietary jargon-detecting software. We calculated the sensitivity and specificity of the automated process for detecting medical jargon as compared to the gold standard manual method. Results are currently pending. We anticipate that an automated method will be of value to health professions educators teaching learners to avoid unnecessary jargon.
