Pediatrics Supporting Parents: Building Caregiver Capacity as a Strategy to Improve Early Childhood Health Outcomes

Session summary: This workshop will explore the Pediatrics Supporting Parents (PSP) initiative, designed to enhance caregiver-clinic-community engagement through collaborative codesign. PSP bridges the gap between healthcare providers, families, and community organizations to ensure equitable, family-centered care for children aged 0-3. By elevating family voices, fostering partnerships with community-rooted organizations, and utilizing the Parent Education Suite as a health literacy tool, PSP builds caregiver capacity, strengthens care coordination, and enhances social-emotional health outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • identify three key strategies from the Pediatrics Supporting Parents (PSP) framework to enhance caregiver-clinic-community engagement in their own programs.

  • identify when and how to develop an educational resource, like the Parent Education Suite (PES), by assessing needs and understanding healthcare systems and infrastructure.

  • evaluate caregiver needs and determine appropriate opportunities for creating tailored educational tools to address gaps in health literacy, similar to the development process of the PES.
