On-Demand: From Policy to Practice: Operationalizing Health Literacy in Cities and Community Programs

Many organizations struggle to move health literacy from high-level policy to everyday practice. This session focuses on the “how” by exploring how municipal and community operations shape health outcomes through communication workflows and staff capacity. We will highlight common operational breakdown points and provide low-cost strategies to embed health literacy into daily routines. Participants will leave with actionable diagnostic tools to improve access and engagement, ensuring health literacy becomes a standard of care across their systems.

Objectives:

  • Identify at least three common operational breakdown points within organizational systems that hinder health literacy and community engagement.

  • Assess existing program workflows and communication practices using diagnostic questions to pinpoint where health literacy barriers occur.

  • Apply at least two practical, low-cost strategies to improve clarity and access within their own municipal or community-based programs.
