On-Demand: From Complexity to Clarity: Building a Global Health Literate Glossary

Our Company Health Literate Glossary is a cross-functional initiative designed to improve comprehension of medical and clinical research information and support consistent, plain-language communication across clinical research and participant-facing materials. There is a critical need for consistent, accessible terminology that supports participant understanding across global clinical research. Current resources vary widely in readability and language coverage. Our Company Health Literate Glossary directly addresses this gap through standardized, multimodal plain-language terms, offering benefits to medical writers, clinicians, and participants while providing a model that can be adopted across organizations. By offering clear definitions, visual aids, and audio pronunciations for clinical research and medical terms in multiple languages, the glossary has increased global accessibility.

Objectives:

  • Describe the collaborative framework for developing a multilingual, health-literate glossary for clinical research across a global organization.

  • Share effective strategies to create plain-language, participant-centered terms with visual and audio support.

  • Explain practical lessons learned for scaling health literacy resources across diverse populations.
