Myhealth.alberta.ca: A Case Study of Integrating Health Literacy When Creating Patient Instructions

How can we ensure that patient instructions given at discharge are clear, understandable, and actionable?

Alberta recently completed the largest Epic implementation in North America. A single clinical information system now spans over 1,000 sites and programs, supporting 125,000 healthcare providers and reaching nearly 5 million patients. As part of this implementation, we created a process to ensure patient instructions in the system undergo a health literacy review.

In this presentation, we follow the creation of one patient instruction. We show how the process integrates health literacy reviews and how this can serve as a model for others.

Learning Objectives:

  • After attending this session, attendees will be able to describe a process to create patient instructions that fully integrates health literacy throughout.

  • After attending this session, attendees will be able to articulate at least 5 benefits of having a dedicated, systematic health literacy review process in the creation of patient instructions.

  • After attending this session, attendees will be able to identify at least 3 opportunities to integrate health literacy reviews into their own organizational processes.
