Improved Collaboration, Better Care: A Team Approach to Health Literacy in Digital Patient Messaging

An urban academic health system (AHS) created new processes to improve universal precautions for health literacy. The AHS has seen a large increase in number of digital patient messages (texts, MyChart, IRB recruitment, emails) without a standard health literacy review. A team from Patient and Family Education, Communications and Marketing, and Information Technology worked together to add health literacy reviews to patient messages. This teamwork raises awareness about health literacy within the organization. The poster will show how setting new technology standards along with governance can improve patient access to personalized health information.
