Health Literacy in Community Context: Results from the Healthy Chicago Survey, 2022-2023

Through the Community Health Response Corps, our community health worker (CHW) initiative, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) aims to improve Chicagoans' ability to find, understand, and use health information. To identify priority communities, CDPH analyzed two questions from the 2022 and 2023 Healthy Chicago Surveys (HCS), an annual population health survey. Weighted survey procedures were employed to produce descriptive statistics and evaluate Chicagoans’ health literacy within the context of their communities. This analysis identified the populations who find it harder to take advantage of community health resources and was a key step in improving Chicagoans’ health literacy.
