From Vision to Action: Transforming Inpatient Care Through Health Literacy Consults

Health literacy is most effective when organizations design workflows and practices that support understanding as part of everyday care. At Children’s Hospital Colorado, health literacy bedside consults translate organizational commitment into routine practice. This session highlights a system-embedded consultation model that supports patients, caregivers, and care teams by identifying learning and communication needs in real time and integrating health literacy strategies into clinical workflows. Using a standardized order in the EMR (Epic), care teams request consults with a member of our health literacy team that result in personalized education tools, care team–integrated communication guidance, and documented recommendations. Participants will gain practical examples for operationalizing health literacy as a shared system responsibility.

Session Objectives:

  • Explore key elements of a health literacy bedside consult model and explain how it supports caregivers and care teams during inpatient stays.

  • Understand how a health literacy bedside consult model supports caregivers and care teams during inpatient stays.

  • Gain awareness of different ways health literacy support can be requested and documented within the electronic medical record.
