Developing an Organization-Wide Approach to Teach-Back Education

To improve health literacy, communication and patient outcomes, Seattle Childrens Patient and Family Education and Communications team developed and implemented a multipronged approach to educating clinical and non-clinical team members about Teach-Back. Teach-Back is a top safety tool where you ask the patient or family to demonstrate a skill or repeat information in their own words to confirm their understanding. The two-year project included the development of a learning module, changes to Epic documentation, organization-wide presentations, monthly safety goal, communication blasts, creation of Teach-Back resources and much more. To date, more than 1,800 workforce members completed the learning module.
