Developing a Public Health Communication Competency Framework

Public health competencies are the knowledge, skills, and abilities practitioners need to be effective in practice. To improve health literacy at scale, public health practitioners must be competent health commmunicators. This Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded project has used a multi-step process to develop a modern Public Health Communication Competency Framework that will contribute to public health systems transformation. The Framework consists of 21 Competency Statements, which were derived from an extensive research process including scoping reviews, environmental scans, a national survey of the public health workforce, key informant interviews, and a modified Delphi technique for consensus building.
