The program Cuidado Para Todos addresses a critical health literacy barrier: the gap between clinical prescription and patient comprehension in vulnerable populations. This session presents an open-source digital tool that automates the creation of visual prescriptions using icons, illustrations, and QR-linked video guides. Validated in rural Brazil since 2020, the platform reduces administrative burden while empowering patients with low functional literacy to manage treatments safely. Participants will explore how human-centered design and low-cost technology can eliminate medication errors and bridge cultural divides, offering a replicable framework for global health equity.
Objectives:
-
Analyze and identify at least three specific linguistic and cognitive barriers in traditional prescriptions that contribute to medication non-adherence among low-literacy populations.
-
Apply design-thinking principles to adapt complex pharmacological instructions into validated visual icons that are culturally appropriate for their specific patient demographics.
-
Implement a hybrid workflow that utilizes open-source digital tools to generate a visual prescription in under 60 seconds, bridging the gap between paper-based records and mobile-assisted health literacy (mHealth).
