Session summary
: The Public Health and Racial Justice Program is an innovative youth education and empowerment program designed as a safe and affirming space for Black youth to learn about the intersections of public health, racial justice, and community activism. This program was developed in the spring of 2020 in direct response to the parallel crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and police violence against Black people, both of which thrust into the spotlight racism’s critical and insidious impact on public health. Three cohorts have now completed the PHRJ, and we encourage other youth-serving institutions to develop similar initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the relationship between health literacy, civic literacy, and efforts to advance health equity
  • Explore the needs, benefits, and challenges of implementing health literacy programming for youth
  • Consider the ways by which your organization can implement programming which builds civic literacy amongst youth, particularly Black youth and youth of color
