Session summary: This presentation will highlight the importance of standardized data collection in addressing health disparities, a vital aspect of health equity. In 2022, the Health Equity Data and Publication Subcommittee of the MDH’s Prevention and Health Promotion Administration (PHPA) began standardizing health equity data collection across PHPA programs. They identified four mandatory indicators (age, geography, sex, race/ethnicity) and 18 recommended indicators (e.g., disability, education, income). The Health Equity Indicator Handbook consolidates these efforts, providing a reference for consistent data practices. Using this handbook enables public health organizations to identify disparities and design targeted programs promoting equity.
Learning Objectives:
-
Incorporate Maryland’s mandatory and recommended indicators in at least one data collection instrument within 6-8 months to identify health disparities among population subgroups.
-
Convene a health equity workgroup of at least four members with diverse perspectives within 6-12 months to identify relevant health equity indicator questions for their organization using reputable sources.
-
Lead at least one training session for public health professionals by June 2026 on the benefits of standardizing health equity indicators and the methods for identifying them.
