Poster abstract: Limited health literacy has been associated with worse outcomes for patients with diabetes mellitus. As part of ongoing quality improvement efforts related to diabetes education, a health literacy assessment using the Newest Vital Sign is now completed with caregivers of children with new onset diabetes at Boston Children’s Hospital prior to initiating diabetes education. The assessment of caregiver health literacy facilitates early identification of health literacy limitations and prompts other specific caregiver assessments including culture, language, and vision. The health literacy and distinct assessments direct timely interventions with tailored education materials and approaches that best meet caregivers’ individual learning needs.
