Adapting Applied Plain Language Training for Translators Who Communicate Health Information

Presenter(s)

Poster abstract: Hispanic adults have significant challenges with health literacy compared to other racial or ethnic groups. An important effort to advance health equity through culturally and linguistically appropriate services is ensuring equitable access to high-quality health education materials. Even when the full range of plain language writing techniques are used to develop source materials in English, we must intentionally incorporate those qualities into the translated Spanish version, and this nuanced writing style is not universally learned or practiced. We will describe development, delivery, and preliminary outcomes of a pilot plain language writing course for translators.
