A Design Thinking Approach to Developing Educational Materials for Families about Sickle Cell Trait

The Cincinnati Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center partnered with Live Well Design to utilize design-thinking methodology to co-develop educational materials for families and newborn screening (NBS) coordinators about sickle cell trait (SCT).  SCT is identified during newborn screening, however, there are not any evidence-based guidelines of educational content for families.  Since COVID-19, many NBS coordinators are conducting educational sessions with families remotely (using video or telephone) which requires a different educational approach and tools. Stakeholders were engaged in this multi-step co-design process that culminated in educational materials, including an animated video, that are easy to understand, culturally appropriate, scalable and sustainable.
