Presentation by Viki Lorraine. Plain Language from the Heart: Through storytelling and insights from a long history of making mistakes, Viki will make a case for why plain language must first come from our hearts not our heads. Plain language from the heart is foundational as we navigate issues of
equity, lifting community voice and creating relationships. She will invite you to think about plain language from a whole person perspective.
About Viki Lorraine
Whether teaching patient-centered communication at a medical school, working with
economically challenged women to decrease their risk of chronic disease, teaching staff to
deliver English as a Second Language programming, or lifting up the voices of
communities to increase their access to healthy foods, for the past 30 years Viki Lorraine’s
work has focused on making sure verbal and written communication can be used and
understood by all audiences.
In her current role as an Education Consultant at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), she helps make sure Michigan‘s school children get fed healthy foods at school. She also works with health equity and social justice initiatives at MDE and provides plain language and health literacy training for staff across many state departments.
