Webinar Description

This webinar will offer strategies and tips for writing effective patient and consumer instructions. The webinar will focus on providing clear messaging for health precautions such as hand washing and writing easy-to-follow steps to take when experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, seasonal flu, or the common cold. The webinar will include important elements of plain language, ways to consider culture and be inclusive, how to test informally with consumers, and what to include and avoid in order to lower barriers and increase compliance with instructions.

  2. Test instructions to be sure they are easy to read and follow
  3. Lower barriers to comprehension and compliance

Joan Winchester, M.Ed.
Director of Technical Writing and Editing

Joan Winchester is a writer and researcher at the Center for Health Literacy. She specializes in writing in plain language for print and web content and developing and conducting consumer testing. She also provides group training and presentations on plain language, health and health insurance literacy, and consumer testing. Before joining the Center, Ms. Winchester was a Reading Specialist in Alexandria, Virginia, where she received the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Award.
