Plain Language for Health (PL4H)

Starts:  Apr 16, 2020 09:00 AM (ET)
Ends:  Apr 17, 2020 04:30 AM (ET)

This workshop is for motivated individuals and teams working to communicate health information in ways people can understand. The two-day event features health literacy and plain language training and an evening networking reception. Participants will engage in practice activities and discussions on how to apply principles of health literacy and plain language to health communication in research and practice. The workshop will teach actionable skills and techniques to improve community engagement, build transparency and trust, and connect with patients, research participants, and the community.

Day one, led by Sabrina Kurtz-Rossi, MEd, Tufts University School of Medicine, nationally recognized health literacy consultant, will dive into plain language as a strategic response to communicating complex health information and engaging communities. This day will cover the fundamentals of plain language writing and design, readability and numeracy, and include hands on application of tools and techniques to enhance reading ease and actionability of written health information.

Day two, led by Christopher Trudeau, JD, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, one of the only health literacy lawyers in the United States, will connect the principles from day one to the creation of clear, user-friendly materials for research including informed consent forms. Attendees will learn about required key information and review the legal aspects and principals involved in writing in plain language.

If you are involved in communicating health information to patients, research participants, and the public – this workshop is for you.
