Weaving Empathy and Clarity into Health Communication

When:  Sep 15, 2021 from 09:00 AM to 10:00 AM (PT)
Description:

Success in health communication requires clarity and empathy to parse and process information—they help exchange more relevant information and promote treatment adherence. We will address clarity through examples and explore the rationale for better choices in writing strategies. We will address empathy through games and guidelines for acknowledging interlocutors—via role play and online games—and for using bias-free language for age, disability, etc.—by considering label relevance/specificity, person/identity first language, self/social reference. We will share a few unintentional puns that show how language creativity binds us together: “When you breathe, you inspire, when you do not breathe, you expire.”

Objectives:
  • Recognize how clarity and empathy contribute to health literacy
  • Identify and apply some plain language strategies for clarity
  • Identify and apply some bias-free language guidelines for empathy
