Share your ideas and experience with the health literacy community. Here's what makes a strong blog and how to submit yours.
Blog Guidelines
What We Look For
The IHA Health Literacy Solutions Center blog shares practical ideas and fresh perspectives from people working to make health information easier to find, understand and use. Strong submissions:
Offer practical takeaways or a clear call to action
Tell readers something new, give a compelling perspective on a current issue or show a better way to do something
Are original and not published or under consideration elsewhere
Length: Most blogs run about 800–2,000 words. Shorter or longer pieces can work when the topic calls for it.
Writing Tips
Use short paragraphs and active voice.
Put the most important information first.
Use headings and subheadings so readers can scan.
Include examples, and link to helpful sources.
Check facts and quotes. Cite the original source, not a source that quoted it.
Edit your first draft, then edit again. Cut anything readers don’t need.
Images and Author Bio
Include at least one image that is 710 pixels wide or larger, with alt text describing it.
Keep your bio to three sentences or fewer.
Send a square headshot at least 350 by 350 pixels: shoulders up, professional attire and a neutral background.
If you’d like, include links to your website and social media profiles.
How to Submit
Send your blog as a Word document through the blog submission form, and include your contact information. Not sure your idea is a fit? Send the idea first, and we’ll share feedback before you write.
IHA reviews every submission. We may accept it, ask for changes, edit it for length and clarity, or decline it. An IHA staff member will follow up with you. Once your blog is published, please share it on social media and with your network.
